How about a city that doesn’t sit up straight for you? Puyang comes in from the side. A bit flat, a bit dusty, a bit older than it looks, and somehow already in motion before you have properly noticed it. In Henan, that is often a good sign.

The first thing people usually mention is the dragon. Fair enough. The shell dragon found at Xishuipo is the city’s famous card, and it deserves the attention because it is so strange and so cleanly made. A dragon assembled from clam shells ought to feel like a child’s story, but somehow it doesn’t. It feels stubbornly real, as if the ground itself had decided to become symbolic for once.
人们通常先提到的，是龙。也对。西水坡发现的蚌塑龙是濮阳最响亮的名片，这张名片也配得上被多看两眼，因为它既奇怪，又做得很干净。用贝壳拼成一条龙，本该像童话，但它并不太像。它显得很真，像是地面自己忽然决定，今天我来负责象征一下。
You can leave that dragon at Qicheng Park and keep walking. Puyang is not only about ancient origins, though there is no shortage of them. Zhuanxu, Shun, old capitals, old stories, a city that has clearly been handed several bits of pedigree whether it asked for them or not. Some cities collect trophies. Puyang seems to have collected family stories.

What made Puyang modern was not a pretty makeover. It was oil. Zhongyuan Oilfield gave the city weight, work and a very practical kind of identity. That sort of origin leaves marks in the streets and in the way people talk about a place. You can feel it when a city knows it was built on something that once came out of the ground and paid the bills for a long time.

The newer version of Puyang is trying to be less dependent on that old arrangement, which is sensible enough. But the old industry still hangs around in the background, like a relative who has retired but still shows up for lunch and comments on the soup.

Then there are the black ceramics and the wheat straw patchwork, which give the city a completely different texture. Those are the kinds of local arts that make a place feel lived in rather than merely managed. They are quiet things. A pot, a strip of straw, a careful hand. No shouting.

Puyang zhuangmo is enormous, round and unapologetic, the sort of thing that looks like it was invented by people who had a long day and decided that the answer was to make one really serious pie. There are other local things too, but zhuangmo is the one that stays in the memory because it has no interest in being dainty.

If you want the city in one very ordinary sentence, it might be this: Puyang knows how to keep moving without pretending to be sleek. That is less glamorous than it sounds, but more useful. There are plenty of sleek places. Fewer places that can still make a dragon, pour oil, weave straw and feed you properly.
如果要用一句很普通的话来说这座城，大概可以这么说：濮阳知道怎么继续往前走，却不装得很光滑。这听起来没那么光鲜，但更有用。光滑的地方很多。还能做出一条龙、抽出石油、编出麦秆画、再把人好好喂饱的地方，少得多。
Getting there from Nanjing is not hard. Direct high-speed trains from Nanjing South to Puyang East now take about 5 hours 42 minutes, which is fast enough to make the trip feel manageable and long enough to remind you that North China has a different rhythm once you cross into it.
从南京去濮阳并不难。南京南到濮阳东的直达高铁现在大约需要5小时42分钟，快到让人觉得不算折腾，又足够让你在路上意识到，一过这个方向，北中国的节奏就变了。
A first visit does not need a grand plan. Start with Qicheng Park and the dragon site, then wander a bit. Eat something. Look at the old bits and the newer bits. If you want more, there is still the industrial present, which is less photogenic but probably more revealing. Puyang is better when it is allowed to drift a little.
第一次来，不必排得太严。先去戚城公园和龙文化遗址，再随便走走。吃点东西。看看老的部分，也看看新的部分。如果还想多看一点，可以去看看它今天的工业面貌，虽然没那么上镜，但可能更说明问题。濮阳这座城，松一点反而更好。
It is one of those places that can look like several different cities depending on where you stand and what time of day it is. Morning oil haze, afternoon wind, evening food stalls, a shell dragon that still feels slightly impossible. That mixture is the point, really. Puyang is not tidy, but it is alive.
