This day, 24 July, in 1886, China and Britain signed the “Burma Articles”, in which both countries agreed that “the frontier between Burmah [now Myanmar] and China was to be marked by a Delineation Commission”. Article 2 in particular stated, “In all matters whatsoever appertaining to the authority and rule which England is now exercising in Burmah, England shall be free to do whatsoever she deems fit and proper”.
