This day, 29 November, 1845, the local government of the Qing Dynasty and the first British consul in Shanghai signed the “Shanghai Land Lease Charter” over a piece of land intended exclusively for foreigners to reside, demarcated by the area north of today’s Yan’an Dong Lu and south of today’s Beijing Dong Lu. The Charter marked thebeginning of the establishment of concessions in China.
