A post-90s nurse in Nanjing has invented an escape apron used to carry babies in emergency. This apron has three large pockets and a small chest pocket. The straps and pockets are a lot bigger than usual. Each pocket has two laces.
“My idea of inventing this apron originated from a piece of news in February when a fire hit a hospital in Jiangsu and patients were in panic as they tried to escape from the room. I imagined such fires in neonatology and how to deal with it,” said Li Fang from Nanjing Zhongda Hospital. She is from the pediatric intensive care unit, a no-accompany ward of the hospital. Li Fang showed this apron.
The size of three large pockets on the apron is 48cm × 38cm. Baby can be put in the pocket and the two strings can fix the pocket. The small pockets can be used to carry some instruments including portable pulse oximeter. The apron is made of flame resistant fabrics which can resist 800 degrees of heat. This can offer better protection for babies.
“Once there’s a fire, we can hold two babies with our hands and put three into the apron. This means one apron can save five babies,” said Li Fang. The apron is strong, solid, simple and the cost is not high. Li Fang’s invention has earned her many praises.
