The Shuangcheng pilot project of sustainable sewage treatment submitted by Jiangsu Hayi Research Institute of Environmental Protection won the 2014 Project Innovation Award of International Water Association (IWA), becoming the only award-winning project from Chinese mainland, announced Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology on June 10.

IWA is the highest academic organization and world’s most authoritative association in aquatic environment field. The Project Innovation Award of IWA, a biennial event founded in 2006, aims at commending outstanding technological innovation in the water project field.

The Shuangcheng sewage treatment project is a cooperative project carried out by Shuangcheng city of Heilongjiang province jointly with the Jiangsu Hayi Research Institute of Environmental Protection in an effort to solve issues such as diffused pollution and energy consumption in agriculture. As it can transform the wastes causing diffused pollution into organic fertilizer which can be used in the filed again or into biogas that can be used to generate electricity that can power the system itself, the system is hailed as “an integrated urban sewage treatment system with zero energy consumption”.
