The 20th Century Central Academy of Fine Arts and Chinese Figurative Painting Exhibition will be officially launched on Oct 25 at Jinling Art Museum.

Dr. GuoHongmei, associate professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, announced ten late Qing Dynasty glass paintings known as “grandmother” of Chinese oil painting at a news conference on the morning of Oct 19.

Dr. GuoHongmei said that glass painting was introduced to China by the Italian painter Giuseppe Castiglione in the Qianlong Period of the Qing Dynasty. It is a typical “East meets West” art style popular among the palace and the aristocratic groups. It is the anti-pen painting in the back of the glass.

Among these glass paintings of the late Qing Dynasty, the one called “water pavilion” is highly respected by Guo. The painting depicts the scene of late Qing Dynasty nobility visit gardens and lakes. The painting includes pavilions, mountains and waters and is colorful and structured. “This is a typical Western classical painting, and the style is very similar to 17th-century Dutch landscape painting,” said Guo.

The price of glass painting is also rising in the market. The price of a pair of Qing Dynasty glass paintings with beautiful frames depicting scenes of rich people’s lives reached £ 180,000 at Sotheby’s special auction of old glass painting in London in 2007.
