The Hongze Lake Levee stretches 70.4 kilometers along the lake in Huai’an city, Jiangsu province.

Built in 200 AD in the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-220), the 1800-year-old levee has a stone shelter wall of 60.1 kilometers long, and is known as the “Overwater Great Wall”. It still plays a vital role in guarding the safety of the Huaiyang region.

The Hongze Lake Levee is one of the most important heritage sites on China’s Grand Canal, which is inscribed on the World Heritage list . It is also one of the core heritage sites in the Qingkou hub heritage area.
