The No 4 detention center of Suzhou, Jiangsu’s first women’s detention center, had its first open day on Mar 11.

In each cell at the detention center there’s a wide bed for 12 people. The TV set in the cell will broadcast news programs every day.There is a solar water heater in the cell so that the detainees could have shower. Direct drinking water is also available. In the back of the cell, there is a yard occupying a dozen of square meters. Detainees can enjoy free exercise in the yard twice a day. They can also wash clothes and hang the washing.

Fu Meiyuan, deputy of the supervision team, explained that the 8 hours of sleep time and 1 hour of outdoor activity time twice a day for the detainees are guaranteed. They can also enjoy music if necessary. Detainees are not required to work and the time limit for voluntary work is 3 hours a day. 

Detainees are provided with 17 kg principal food, 15 kg vegetables, 0.5 kg cooking oil, 1.5 kg meat and 1.5 kg soy every month. Snacks are also available. There is a cafeteria for detainees of the Hui ethnic group.

Currently there are four detention centers in Suzhou. The No 4 detention center was established on Jan 1, 2014 and it is the first women’s detention center in Jiangsu Province.
