The long-awaited one-card-through plan for mass transit in Jiangsu has taken shape, and citizens may use one card to take the buses, subways and taxis in 13 prefecture-level cities within this year, said You Qingzhong, head of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transportation at the 14th Asia-Pacific Smart Transportation Forum on Apr 28.

According to You Qingzhong, the one-card-through for Jiangsu’s mass transit is faced with 2 challenges: On the one hand, each city has established its own mass transit card system, and a uniform standard is not available. On the other hand, each city has its own operators whose interests need to be coordinated. Taking the opportunity of holding the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, Jiangsu realized one-card-through for mass transit in the Nanjing-Zhenjiang-Yangzhou metropolitan circle last year, and this standard will be applied to the whole province.

Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transportation has entered into a fundamental framework agreement with the governments and operators of 13 prefecture-level cities so far, and the plan will be reported to the provincial government for approval. In addition, 29 provinces and cities in China will join the ETC interconnection this year after the ETC system was put into operation in 14 provinces and cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Zhejiang last year.
