A China’s 50-centimeter-diameter Antarctic astronomical telescope coded named AST3-2, which was funded by Nanjing University (NJU), was installed at Dome A of Antarctic at the beginning of 2015. It started the observation and obtained the scientific data on 8th April after commissioning.

NJU joined the Antarctic astronomical telescope project in September 2012 through the support of its phase-three 985 Projects, namely the projects to build the university into the world class university and the high level university.

The main scientific goals of the project include exoplanets search and gamma ray burst detection. By using the previous scientific data from the CSTAR in 2008, the Institute of Astronomy and Space Science discovered six exoplanet candidates, a batch of double stars and variable stars and so on.
