The 2013 IDEA Awards was presented at the annual conference of the Society of Industrial Designers of America in Chicago, America, in August 2013. The “Brand new ecological system on the roof” designed by Teng Xuan, a post-90s young man from Nanjing, Jiangsu province of China, won the gold award, becoming the only one receiving the gold award from Chinese Mainland this year.

Teng Xuan graduated from Nanjing No 6 Middle School, majored in design at Design School of Jiangnan University, and is now pursuing further education at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands and studying for the master’s degree in industrial design. Previously, Teng has won the Red Dot Design Award, another world-renowned design award, last year.

Oscar is the widely-accepted highest honor for movies. Similarly, there are three major awards in the design industry which are equivalent to Oscar – namely, Red Dot Design Award, iF Product Design Award (International Forum Design Award), and IDEA Awards. Originating from Germany, the Red Dot Design Award may date back to 1955, and is one of the most influential design competitions in the world. The IDEA Awards, i.e., the Industrial Design Excellence Awards, is an award program sponsored by Business Week magazine. It has not only become the most important award that manifests design achievements in the manufacturing industry in America, but also had strong appeal to the enterprises in other countries.
