A survey conducted in Nanjing concluded that 60% of respondents rarely exercise but watch television for approximately two hours per day.

The survey found that only 27% of the city’s residents exercise on a daily basis. Meanwhile, 60% of residents do so once a month or hardly at all, according to a report published by local newspaper “Modern Express” on Tuesday.

Majority said they prefer to watch television over completing exercise. Many also love to play cards, surf the internet or partake in other activities that involve little physical activity over long time periods.

Nanjing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention released the survey results on Monday — National Health Lifestyle Day. The results were based upon the answer of over 40,000 respondents above 18 years of age.

Doctors at the center recommended minimum 30 minutes of exercise per day.

In June, the World Health Organization released a report saying that lack of exercise has become the fourth most common contributing risk to death.
