Nanjing supplies 70% of the food and beverage ingredients for the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games (Nanjing 2014), and these must undergo a safety check before entering the warehouse, followed by another safety check before dispatching and one last safety check before being served.

Before entering the warehouse, the purchased ingredients must undergo dozens of tests for indices such as chemical residue, heavy metal and hormone. Once they have passed the tests they will be transported to a designated warehouse guarded by security staff round the clock. The surrounding of the warehouse is fitted with security cameras that are connected to the computer system in a control room. Two more safety checks must be performed before the ingredients leave the warehouse and are eventually served.

A lot of medicine contains banned substances such as stimulants. These can be found in cold medicine and cough syrup and may affect athletes’ performance. Therefore, the food and drug administration concerned issued a notice demanding pharmacies to strictly adhere to doctors’ prescription when selling such types of medicine and repeatedly advised consumers that “athletes should exercise caution” when taking such medicine. In addition, medicine cannot be sold to individuals without doctors’ prescription. Anyone who violates the rule will be personally held liable.
