Jiangsu Radiation Environmental Protection Consultation Center joined hands with State Power Environmental Protection Research Institute and Jiangsu Electric Power Company to develop a “smart map” for power grids. Jiangsu has the largest-scale power grid in China. As grid density increases, a top concern in grid construction is how to protect the environment and effectively avoid ecologically sensitive objects during construction.

At present, Jiangsu province has demarcated 779 blocks of ecological red-line areas (area can not be infringed for the reason of environmental protection), totaling 24,000 square kilometers and consisting of 15 categories. The ecologically red-line areas are under classified management, where development and construction activities that are harmful to their leading ecological functions are prohibited.

“To lay out the power grid reasonably while observing the ecological red line is the best choice for a ‘win-win’ situation,” said Lin Ju, an engineer at Jiangsu Radiation Environmental Protection Consultation Center. The “smart map” will alert promptly once planned power transmission lines touch the ecological red-line areas.

“This makes overall grid planning and construction more efficient and facilitate control from the source,” said Lin.
