China’s first island “green road” has opened at Nanjing’s Jiangxinzhou, an island in the Yangtze River.

The 140-kilometer road circles the whole island and connects to the island’s Jiangdi, Linyin and Binhe roads. The road is designed mainly for pedestrians, and is completely separated from motor ways. The road is scheduled to be fully completed by 2020.

Hundreds of residents rode bicycles along the road last weekend. Although it was hot summer, the greenery along the either side of the road and the Yangtze River breeze gave riders some relief.

Yuan Qin, chief planner of Singapore Nanjing Eco Hi-tech Island Development, said that being a demonstrative island city among China’s eco-cities, Nanjing’s Jiangxinzhou boasts a green coverage of over 70 percent.
