A picture named “Nanjing PM 2.5 Distribution Map” has been re-posted by many of Nanjing netizens on the Internet recently.

The map colors six areas of Liuhe, Jiangpu, Jiangning, Lishui, Gaochun and downtown Nanjing with different colors. Green indicates the PM 2.5 pollution is light, while purple indicates severe pollution.

24-year old Qi Lixin, who is now the first-year graduate student of Geographical Information Science in Sun Yat-sen University, is the producer of the map. Qi Lixin said that the data of the map was from 9 monitoring stations in Nanjing collected at 5:00 p.m on Feb 1.

Is this PM 2.5 distribution map reliable? Zhu Bin, professor of School of Atmospheric Physics under Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, said that the map is imperfect because the data was collected from one time point and places without enough monitoring points, however, it’s a deed worth encouraging.
