“Father of logistics” gives speech on logistics in Nanjing

The three-day-long 3rd China (Nanjing) Int’l Trade Fair for Distribution, Material Handling and Information Flow for Logistics & Transportation kicked off in Nanjing on April 19. Prof. Michael ten Hompel, managing director at Fraunhofer-Institute of Material Flow and Logistics IML, delivered his first speech in China at the fair.

“In the Industry 4.0 era, automatic and self-help will be the biggest trend in storage and production,” said Prof. ten Hompel. He introduced that Industry 1.0 promotes mechanization with steam, Industry 2.0 promotes mass production with electricity while Industry 3.0 promotes automation with electronic information technology and Industry 4.0 is intelligent and self-help. “Using the integrated network for data sharing to achieve the lowest cost of production and lowest consumption of resources,” he said. He also acknowledged that Germany Industry 4.0 and Made in China 2025 are the results of innovative industrial civilization and thus they all have huge potential for cooperation and development.
