Five students of Mechanical Engineering Department of Southeast University Chengxian College have invented a voice-control mobile garbage can which not only is suitable for “lazybones” and “indoorsy people”, but also can offer considerate services to people having difficulty in moving.

When submitting their innovative projects in 2013, Zhou Lei and other four students found most of the smart garbage cans in the market can only automatically open and close the cover, and they decided to upgrade such garbage cans.

“We use the voice recognition module so that the garbage cans can ‘understand the human languages’,” said Zhou.

A signal receiver is mounted on the garbage can, so that the can is able to receive signals within 100 meters and act according to instructions, said Zhou Lei. Also mounted on the garbage can is an ultrasonic device which can help the can avoid obstacles in movement.

The experiment cost of such garbage can is about 2,000 yuan ($320). After mass production, the price may drop to about 200 yuan ($32) which is affordable for ordinary people.
