The 5th Future Challenges for Intelligent Vehicles of China (the FCIV) was unveiled on Nov 2 in Changshu of Jiangsu province. A total of 18 driverless vehicles from 10-odd universities and scientific research institutions in China as well as Seoul National University in the Republic of Korea participated in the competition, the largest of its kind in China.

The FCIV consists of test running on suburban roads and urban roads. Compared with previous competitions, the road environment this year is more complex and diversified and scenes including arch bridge, tunnel, ramp and school doorway are added so as to assess driverless vehicles’ capability to sense traffic signs, humans, vehicles and objects, and their autonomous decision-making and correct behavior controlling capabilities, according to Zheng Nanning, chief commander of the FCIV and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Driverless vehicle, a typical intelligent system, involve many cutting-edge research fields including cognitive science, pattern recognition, intelligent control and computer technology, among which natural environment sensing and intelligent behavior decision-making are the key technologies to achieve autonomous driving for manless vehicles, according to sources.
