Jiangsu Province will enact a new rule on February 1 to include serious traffic violations in the driver’s personal credit record.

Under the new regulation, running the red light, habitual speed driving, drunk driving, car plate cover-up, driving after taking drug, and breaking traffic rules more than 20 times a year will be added to the driver’s credit record.

Jiangsu is the first in China to adopt such a rule. It has more than 10 million licensed drivers across the province.

Those with a poor credit record will have difficulty to obtain loans, get job promotion, and win honors.

The regulation also states that a person’s bad credit record is valid for only one year to five years depending on the severity of his or her offense.
