Seven volunteers from Nanjing Finless Porpoises Protection Association came to the water basin 3.5 kilometers away from Qianzhou Island where the finless porpoises are often spotted, and observed their activities on Nov 1.

A volunteer found two finless porpoises at 10:30 am there and then dozens of them were found swimming against the stream. At several minutes past 15:00, a female volunteer Xu also reported their discoveries.

The provincial-level nature reserve of Nanjing Yangtze River finless porpoises was officially established in last October. In order to protect finless porpoises effectively, the government has regulated to strictly control the number of new ports and banned fishing inside the reserve area.

Mr Wu, a volunteer, said that he has paid attention to finless porpoises since eight or nine years ago, but it is the first time for him to see so many finless porpoises. They look very active, which proves that the protection takes effects.
