This day, 9 September, in 1976, Chairman Mao Zedong passed away in Beijing. From then on until 18 September, flags across the country were flown at half mast and all entertainment activities were stopped. Heads of state, government and speakers of 125 countries sent messages of condolences, while on both 9 and 18 September, flags were flown at half mast at the United Nations Headquarters in mourning.
