This day, 8 January, in 1938, Canadian doctor Norman Bethune led a medical team from Vancouver to China to support Chinese people in the Second Sino-Japanese War. He actively treated both soldiers and civilians to later die in the line of duty in Tang County, Hebei Province. In his article, “In Memory of Norman Bethune”, Mao Zedong wrote, “We must all learn the spirit of absolute selflessness from him”.
