This day, 5 September, in 1988, when Deng Xiaoping met with Czechoslovak President, Gustav Husak, he made the important assertion that “science and technology are the primary productive forces” for the first time. Deng pointed out, “The world is changing, and our thoughts and actions must also change with it. In the past, we closed ourselves off and isolated ourselves. What good did this do to socialism?…”
