This day, 26 October, in 1997, at the invitation of US President Bill Clinton, Chinese President Jiang Zemin paid a state visit to the United States, the first by a Chinese head of state to the US in 12 years, during which the two sides agreed that the relationship between the two countries is not only in their fundamental, mutual interest, but also crucial to achieving world peace and prosperity in the 21st century.
