On this Day in Chinese History; 24 September

This day, 24 September, in 1982, Deng Xiaoping met with British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, and comprehensively elaborated on the Chinese government’s basic position on Hong Kong. Deng pointed out that China has no room for maneuver on the issue of sovereignty. Post 1997, Hong Kong’s current political and economic systems will remain essentially unchanged, and capitalism shall prevail.
