This day, 19 October, in 1954, Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited the New China, accompanied by his daughter and future Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. During discussions, Chairman Mao Zedong expressed his appreciation for India’s refusal to participate in the Manila Conference that signed the Southeast Asia Collective Defence Treaty and its vote in favour of restoring China’s seat in the United Nations.
