Suzhou in our very own Jiangsu has been the sene of a most gruesome discovery in recent days. That’s where a woman has surrendered to the authorities after her husband’s dead body was found in an ice chest in the couple’s home.

The woman, surnamed Zha, who lives in Yidong Yuan Residential Community of Gusu District in Suzhou, just off the City’s West Ring Road, killed her husband, surnamed Pang, and hid his body in the freezer in their home for more than 15 months.

As a means to imply all was normal, Zha then went on to send messages using the deceased’s WeChat account.

On 19 March, a journalist for The Paper learned that the deceased and his wife were engaged in real-estate-agency work in Suzhou and that they had been married in 2020.

Staff with Yidong Yuan said that the deceased was born in 1993 and that the couple had a daughter together. The apartment where Cha and Pang lived has been sealed by local police, with security personnel posted to stand watch.

A friend of Pang spoke with The Paper. “Some time ago, Pang’s mother-in-law came home to cook and found his body in the refrigerator, so she advised Zha to hand herself in”, said the friend.

Neighbours revealed that they thought the time of death to be at least a month before. “We didn’t know until a police car arrived at the end of February”, said one.

The crime is suspected to have been financially motivated, although it is said there are other possible reasons.

Referencing Zha’s social media activity, reporters noticed she had posted multiple videos of late, mostly very emotional in nature.

The last time was on 13 February. On 10 March, an online commentator quizzed under a short video Zha had posted on 9 February, “Where’s your husband?”.

Police at the Youxin Police Station in Gusu have said they cannot comment on the case at this time.
