When pulled over at a police check point and asked for their documentation, most drivers simply comply politely, while a few will find the need to make up one excuse or another as to why they cannot. But now and again…

It was in the Yangtze riverside city of Nantong in eastern Jiangsu Province that a garden-variety police check of drivers on 30 June got quickly out of hand, leading to significant injury for one very brave and dedicated officer.

That officer’s well-trained police instincts kicked in during the questioning of one driver at Nantong Railway Station who had been stopped for the routine check.

Cop: “Can I see your vehicle licence?”

Driver [sarcastic]: “What licence?”

Cop: “OK, hand over your phone. And what about your online, ride-hailing permit?”

Driver: “I just do it sporadically now. Business is bad these days.”

Cop: “Come on, now. Come on. Hand it over”.

But Wang did not produce his licence to operate an online, ride-hailing service. Instead, as the discussion became increasingly-strained, he attempted to flee the scene by suddenly driving away. But Wang’s next problem was that the unnamed policeman was not letting go of his car.

Zhao Zixuan of the Nantong Railway Station Police Station spoke with media outlet, The Paper. “[Our colleague] did not want to become separated from the suspect. And so he was dragged down the road for 270 metres”, she said. “That’s after Wang stepped on the accelerator and sped away.” Video of the vehicle driving off can be seen via this link.

The officer eventually could hold on to the vehicle no longer and Wang successfully made his escape. But it did not stay that way for long, as other law enforcement officers soon apprehended him.

The injured officer was left with multiple fractures of his left hand and skin contusions over his whole body.

Wang confessed his wrongdoing to the police, while the case remains under further investigation.
