The Expat “Stop the Coronavirus” Art Competition today enters its closing stages, with an invitation to the general public to vote for their favourite work(s) among the many submitted entries. Voting can be done via WeChat by following this link.

A creation of the Nanjing Foreign Affairs Service Association (NFASA), the competition recognises that art can send a powerful message. It is this visual aspect of the epidemic prevention message that the competition seeks to explore.

It also brings the foreign community closer to the local Chinese. With children’s school holidays morphing into online classes, they too observe developments. Children see the epidemic and its ramifications through their own eyes, in the special way that young eyes see the world.

The unique competition got under way on 8 February, the Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao Jie; 元宵节), that falls 2 weeks after the Chinese New Year. By allowing 14 days for people to submit their entries, the art competition fell in line with the 14 day quarantine period and the 14 days of the Chinese New Year.

Organisers of the competition at NFASA have been amazed at not only the standard of many of the entries, but also at the distances some of the entries have travelled.

Several schools also got behind the art competition, embracing it as an added-value way of enhancing their online home learning. Entries have come in from students at the British School of Nanjing, Nanjing International School, Shanghai Community International School, Suzhou Singapore International School, Dulwich College Suzhou and Shen Wai International School in Shenzhen.

But none have come as far as those from Barker College in Sydney, Australia.

These closing stages of the art competition begin with two rounds of voting, with this first round getting underway today. Round two, with the other half of entries, is expected tomorrow. The organisers hope to then stage a physical exhibition of finalists at some point in the near future, and to award commendations.

Only one voting session is permitted per person (or more accurately, per phone), but a session may comprise votes for more than one artwork. It is necessary to log in to WeChat before voting. The results of the vote to date are immediately viewable after voting.

Voting can be done via WeChat by following this link.
