On Friday 26th April, 2013, nearly 200 international students at the British School of Nanjing celebrated the end of an exciting History Week. The students had spent a week expanding their learning of the history of the world focusing on the history and culture of many countries in addition to the Chinese history and culture they learn on a daily basis.

The students gave much thought to the way they would like to be a part of history themselves and decided to create a time capsule to be buried in the school grounds.

The capsule contained many items of daily life both in Nanjing and at the British School and were all suggested by the students. Items included a copy of the day’s “China Daily” newspaper, a school tie, many examples of students’ work, a Beaver badge commemorating China’s first Beaver Colony together with a reproduction of the first Scout badge produced for China. Included with these was a USB memory stick containing a selection of digital photos chronicling the six years since the school’s foundation.

The capsule was buried in front of a recently completed community art piece by Chinese Master Artist Qin Jian Ming. Eight students from the United Kingdom, South Africa, Germany, USA, Hong Kong and South Korea were invited to take part in the ceremony, representing students who had joined the school each year and including both the first student and the latest students to join the school.
