Nanjing’s blemish-free record for keeping the epidemic at bay was threatened yesterday, as a local citizen was found to be coronavirus positive upon entry to Japan. Back at home, authorities took all necessary steps to ensure no infection had entered the populace.

Yesterday, 12 August, the Municipal Health Commission received notification that a 20-year-old woman from Xuanwu District in Nanjing had tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Japan the day prior, 11 August.

The lady had spent 4 days from 2 to 6 August traveling in and around Quanzhou City of Fujian Province. Upon returning to Nanjing and in preparation for her trip to Japan, she went to Nanjing No.2 Hospital for the required nucleic acid test.

With a negative result, the lady flew from Nanjing to Dalian on 10 August and from Dalian to Tokyo on 11 August. The test upon arrival in the Japanese capital came back positive whereupon the lady was isolated without showing any symptoms, reported PSA Nanjing (南京发布) yesterday.

Back here in Nanjing, the Municipal Health Commission immediately carried out an epidemiological investigation, taking preventive and control measures against relevant close contacts.

All of the lady’s detected close contacts in Nanjing have been quarantined, put under observation and undergone nucleic acid testing. Results thereof have all returned negative.

With the passing of time, Nanjing has steadily lifted virtually all restrictions as to the populace’s movement and behaviour. The incident in Japan reminds us that we should not become apathetic about letting down our guard.

Health authorities remind Nanjingers that we should maintain the good habits that have been formed by most of us since the epidemic began.

Daily prevention and control measures include the wearing of face masks as appropriate, frequent hand washing, ensuring sufficient ventilation and social distancing. At mealtimes, the use of communal spoons and chopsticks, an excellent practice that many establishments have recently discontinued, is strongly recommended. Should any symptoms display themselves, such as fever and a cough, firstly remember to wear a face mask on the journey to seek prompt medical attention, and to inform health authorities of travel and contact history, as well as other key information.
