Frequent users of the Nanjing Metro will from tomorrow be able to benefit from a radically overhauled timetable on several of the city’s 10 metro lies, with some seeing faster travel times and others with earlier and later departures for first and last trains.

From tomorrow, 27 October, the changes come into effect on Nanjing Metro Lines 2, 3, S3 and S8.

At present, trains on the Nanjing metro become gathered at either end of each line with the arrival of the last train of the day. Each morning, the first train departs, in most cases at 6.00 am, followed by the remaining train sets at their timetabled intervals.

The result is that there can can be as much as an hour in difference between the first and last train times from the stations along the line. For example, the first train on Line 2 from Jingtian Lu left today at 6.00 am, meaning that it was also the first train to depart from Yurun Da Jie, but not until it got there, to leave at 06.56.

This all changes from tomorrow, as Nanjing Metro implements what it is calling a “First Train from Multiple Stations” scheme, reports the Yangtze Evening News.

Under the scheme, empty trains shall be deployed on Line 2 in preparation for additional 6.00 am departures from Maqun and Muxu Yuan stations, joining the present 6 am service from Jingtian Lu.

In the other direction, the first departure of the day will be joined by two from Jiqing Men Da Jie and Maqun, also at 6.00 am. As a result, the first train time from many stations on line 2 will be some 12-42 minutes earlier than at present.

The new scheme shall also operate over on Nanjing Metro Line 3, where the first train departing Linchang, unchanged at 5:50 am, will be supplemented by trains leaving at 6.00 am from Nanjing Railway Station, Daxinggong and Daming Lu stations.

From south to north, the first service of the day from Mozhou Dong Lu station shall be joined by services departing Nanjing South Railway Station, Daxinggong station and Nanjing Railway station, also at 6:00 am. First train times from many of Line 3’s stations shall therefore be some 15-48 minutes ahead of the current schedule.

There is also good news for night owls living in Pukou District. The last service on Line S8 from from Taishan Xin Can to Getang will from tomorrow be extended to Fangzhou Guang Chang, while its departure will also be 10 minutes later than at present, at 10:40 pm.

Last trains from Shenqiao to Jinniu Lake and from Jinniu Lake to Taishan Xin Cun will not be adjusted during this timetable change.

Finally, on Metro Line S3, during the morning and evening peak, services on the Nanjing South Railway Station to Liu Cun and the Maweixu to Gaojia Chong sections of the line shall see their journey times reduced by as much as 3 minutes.
