Nanjingers looking for something different to do this summer staycation have a creative, if only temporary, outlet for their all their WeChat Moments’ desires, in the form of a Clash de Cartier Experience Centre described as “a break in traditional visual inertia”.
Yesterday, 16 July saw the limited-time Clash de Cartier Experience Centre open in Nanjing’s Deji Plaza. Herein, playing on optical illusion, the roof and door frame are tilted; the seats and carpet flipped to far from where they rightfully belong.
With the intention of countering the frustrating whimsies of gravity, such a visual impact is intended to excite the other side of the self, described the Yangtze Evening News.

The Nanjinger thinks it’s all kind of a bit like being on a sinking, capsized ship.
The accompaniment to this reality distortion is an exclusive playlist curated by fashion’s favourite DJ (actually, he’s a “Sound Designer”), Michel Gaubert, who also recently worked with Vogue to provide the fashion icon with a “lockdown playlist” (think Pet Shop Boys, of course).
Gaubert provided his playlist to accompany the launch of Clash de Cartier a little under a year ago. With its rivets, round beads and square studs, Cartier demonstrated a double-sided charm. So Gaubery follows suit with his music selections; through, for example, a juxtaposing of genres; Billy Idol’s “Dancing with Myself” vs. Kraftwerk’s “The Model”. Or put another way, completely random.

Back in Xinjiekou, The Centre poses the question, “Why can’t the sensory experience be turned upside down?”
Gravity does cooperate, however, in the Clash try-on area, where all fashionistas’ fantasies become complete. Experience the exquisite craftsmanship that goes into works of jewellery both elegant and shining, but unrestrained; gentle and moving, but courageous and resolute.
The Centre is all about collision. And it’s all very you. And all absolutely fabulous.
