This day, 9 June, in 1898 in Beijing, Li Hongzhang, Grand Secretary of the Wenhua Hall; and Claude MacDonald, Her Majesty’s Minister in China, signed the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory, stipulating that the New Territories, incluing north Kowloon but excluding Kowloon Fortress, would be leased to Britain for 99 years and at no charge.
