This day, 30 May, in 1925, more than 10,000 people from all walks of life in Shanghai went to Nanjing Lu to protest against an unlawful killing by Japanese spinning mill capitalists. Under the order of a British inspector, patrol officers of the Shanghai International Settlement opened fire on the crowd, killing 12, injuring dozens and arresting many others.
