This day, 20 July in 1972, China and the Federal Republic of Germany signed an internal memorandum of understanding to promote the establishment of diplomatic relations. The day before, when meeting Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gerhard Schröder, Premier Zhou Enlai said, “That Germany has never had relations with Chiang Kai-shek should be attributed to Chancellor Adenauer, who is a far-sighted politician”.
