This day, 13 March, in 1972, China and the United Kingdom signed a joint communique in Beijing, announcing that both countries had decided to upgrade their diplomatic representatives stationed in each other’s capitals from charge d’affaires to ambassadors with immediate effect, with the Government of the United Kingdom recognising the People’s Republic as the sole lawful government of China.
