This day, 10 January, in 1997, China vetoed a United Nations’ Security Council plan to send 155 United Nations military observers to monitor the Guatemala peace accords, its representative to the UN arguing the proposal undermined China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and interfered in its internal affairs. China lifted the veto on 21 January, allowing the Security Council to authorise the operation.
