Often thought of as marking the definitive end of the British Empire, the handover ceremony was attended for the Chinese by President Jiang Zemin, Premier Li Peng, and Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen; for the British by Prince Charles (Now King Charles III), Prime Minister Tony Blair and Governor Chris Patten.
