A memory: The streets were darker then. Three buildings under construction in Zhujiang Lu at the corner of Zhongshan Lu reared up. At night they loomed over the sidewalks, like threatening alien life forms. Enormous black towers of doom. Sometimes a welder would be working late, and cascades of sparks would shower down in spectacular fashion. Nearly a decade later, the intersection is a blaze of light in a city that has become dominated by modern shops, massive LED screens, and well-lit streets. Night welders are no longer noticed, and new constructions are lit day and night. If you’ve been here a long time, what do you notice?
