No matter how comfortable you get living in Nanjing, there are always those occasions when you are really aware that you are in another culture. A case in point happened the other night. A man on a bicycle is stopped at the gate of a government building, staring intently. Inside was a guard waving a large piece of wood as if it were a sword. At first it appeared that it was an aggressive situation, but then it was clear that the guard was smiling. He waved the piece of wood up and down in front of his body. Then, still smiling, he brought the wood back hard on his own head. The wood smashed into two, and the guard continued smiling. It seems very likely that this guard is one dude that you don’t want to mess with.
