This tendency of drains to rupture and lead fluid for rather a long time may have a bad effect under the surface. So if you see a dip in the footpath (sidewalk), avoid it. Underneath might be, well, nothing. Not a pleasant concept, falling into a pit of stale sewage. Your resulting expletive might be absolutely correct.
