Suzhou issues first ‘restraining order’

Ms Chen married to a man surnamed Zhang in 2005. But Ms Chenbelieved that Zhang lacks responsibility for the family and shedecided to divorce him. The Kunshan People’s Court began to try the case in early November this year.

However, during this period, Zhang repeatedly stalked,harassed and threatened Ms Chen. Zhang even called people to limit Ms Chen’s personal freedom outside the courthouse.

Zhang’s behavior has seriously affected the normal life of Ms Chen. Because of his unreasonable behavior, Zhang was held in administrative detention for 12 days. But he did not change. Ms Chen applied for protection of personal safety to the court and Kunshan court therefore issued a “personal safety protection order”, which prohibited Zhang from threating, harassing and stalkingMs Chen and her relatives. The order is valid for three months.

The personal security protection order is a civil enforcement measure issued by the people’s court for the protection of victims of domestic violence, their children and relatives to ensure the normal conduct of proceedings in matrimonial cases.
