The 4th World Mahjong Championship organized by the Mahjong International League was concluded in Jeju Island, Korea on the evening of Nov 14. Zhou Yong from Baoying, Yangzhou took the crown in the individual event.

“I learned Mahjong at my childhood from grandparents. It was not until 2006 that I became fond of Mahjong. I won individual championship titles in domestic matches two successive times in recent two years”, said Zhou, 39, owner of a computer company in Baoying.

“We have a national Mahjong standard, which was stipulated by the General Administration of Sports of China in 1998. The international standard in force is almost the same as our national standard. In Baoying, the rules happen to be quite similar”, Zhou added.

Europeans are good at playing Mahjong. When I was competing with Ms Tina, Chairman of European Mahjong League, and the other two players, Tina had seven legal winning hands in the 16-hand game consisting of four rounds. It is evident that she is a skillful player. European Mahjong players are generally high-level intellectuals, including engineers and scientists, according to Zhou.
