Heavy convective clouds suddenly hit Jiangsu on the afternoon of Apr 28. The meteorological departments of Jiangsu province and Nanjing city issued a yellow alert for the hail when a strong wind swept through the region at 7 pm.

“I have lived forty years in the world. It is the biggest hail stone that I have ever seen,” a netizen surnamed Huang exclaimed and post a picture of egg-sized hail stone on his micro-blog. Many windshields of private cars, balconies, flower beds and green belt on the street were hit by the hail.

Experts explained that hail consists of ice balls within thunderstorm produced by severe convection.

It often falls at the end of spring and the beginning of summer. Wei Jiansu, chief forecaster of Jiangsu Meteorological Center, introduced that Nanjing and Jiangsu are often battered by wild weather from April to May. The frequent cold and warm air convection will bring thunderstorm, heavy rain, strong wind and hail.
