This day, 21 July, in 1896, as the continuation of the Treaty of Shimonoseki, the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Commerce and Navigation was signed in Beijing. As well as permitting the presence of consuls general in trading ports, the Treaty in part stated that the trading of goods between China and Japan would be handled in accordance with the then current tariffs and regulations thereto between China and Western countries.
