This day, 22 June, 1979, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Ireland established diplomatic relations. Ireland has since benefitted greatly from its relationship with China, to the extent of marking the diplomatic relations’ anniversary in 2019 by introducing a 5-year multiple-entry visa option for Chinese visitors. Irish minister for Justice and Equality Charles Flanagan called it “a form of 40th birthday present”.
