This day, 7 June, 1895, the Japanese army occupied Taipei. After the signing of the humiliating Treaty of Shimonoseki, the island of Taiwan was ceded to Japan, which aroused the indignation of the whole country, setting off a patriotic wave of Chinese protest against the cession of territory and indemnity, and demanding the continuation of the War of Jiawu, also known as the First Sino-Japanese War.
