This day, 15 May, 1953, China and the Soviet Union signed a protocol on the Soviet Union’s assistance to China in developing its national economy, particularly with large-scale engineering projects. During China’s First 5-Year Plan, the Soviet Union provided a total of 156 assistance projects to China, which played a major role in laying the initial foundation for China’s industrialisation.
